BYU-Idaho

I finally got my financial aid statement on Tuesday and now I know I can afford to go, so I am. And I am very excited! I can't wait to get there. I am so glad that I can get started on my education. I really didn't want to postpone it for another year. I have been working on registering for classes which is hard because everything is full but I only need one more class, so I think all will work out.
I won't have any extra money because I have just enough to cover all the school costs (tuition, books, housing, meal plan, plane ticket out there...) but I am very glad to be able to go.

Hey, just wanted to give you a few tips about making that dollar go a little further in Rexburg.

1. Don't live on campus and don't eat on campus. When you live in local (BYU-I approved) housing you can find ok places for an ok price (housing here usually takes in on average 1,600/apt/month... gross I know, but that's what happens when the school creates housing monopolies.)

2. When you come to campus get involved! There are TONS of ways to get involved! If you are ever wondering how, go over to the Rigby offices, wonder around and find someone and ask. They will be more than happy to help. This will give you leverage for scholarships.

3. If you have a car, don't use it a ton. Get used to walking, it will save you lots of money. Most everything in Rexburg is within a 15 min walking distance.

4. Buy cheep food AT WALMART!! Broulims and Albertsons have WAY too expensive stuff. And if you can convince your parents, go to shop at the Walmart in Idaho Falls (30 min away) not the one here, it will have much cheeper prices. They also have a Sam's club in I.F. as well. You can usually survive well off a $20/week budget.

5. I'm not sure about your situation, but look into applying for the Heber J. Grant scholarship. It's for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

6. Go to the $3 movie theater on College Ave instead of "the Rex" and don't go to "the Rex" to go bowling, go to Teton lanes, it's about half the cost.

7. If push comes to shove, you can donate your plasma (something in your blood) for $30 a pop. You can donate 2x's a week, so I think that's $240 additional dollars a month. If you can stand having a needle in your arm and seeing your own blood.

That's about it! Enjoy your time at BYU-Idaho!

(P.S. Sorry for all of the local lingo, you'll understand it when you come.)
