I learned after my first year not to buy textbooks until after I went to the first class, because a lot of the professors will tell you during that first class that they don't even use them! I got tired of wasting money that I didn't have! That only works if you can buy them on campus though, because if they do want to use them you can't get it shipped in time for the first assignment usually.
